Why I Got Into (and Stayed in) IT
In November of 2024, I broke my ankle during a local Men's League Hockey game. I went to the urgent care of the HCO I was working at, and then later to the Emergency Room to find I needed reconstructive surgery. I watched as the nurses logged into my chart, used the hand scanners I had personally installed and purchased in my role, and provide excellent care to me as I navigated my current reality.
That full-circle moment, knowing that my wife, son, daughter, mother, or other family member or friend could just as easily be in my shoes (or worse), gave me a very inspired outlook on why it is that I came into work every day, and continue to work on my skills. That was where I truly realized my fulfillment in my career, and what pushes me to be the best technologist I can be.
Today, that purpose has morphed into protecting all kinds of assets. Credit card information for a small business trying to turn their passion into a business. Helping seniors protect the value they've built up over a long career to support their families. And other organizations' assets who look to improve their communities in the best ways they can. I figure that by helping them, I'm doing my part to make my community a better place, even if just a little.
Here's what I have learned in by 15 years of IT academics and experience; It is the translation - taking something genuinely complicated and handing it back to someone as a decision they can actually make, or explain it in a way they can utilize it best. It could have meant the difference between my smooth recovery, and a much different experience.
Sunformatics exists so I can do that work the way I always thought it should be done: plainly, proportionately, and for the organizations that cannot hire an entire security department to figure it out for them, or afford the giant consultant organizations for support to meet their needs, both routine and ad-hoc.
The best day on this job is the one where a client stops losing sleep over something they used to worry about every week.
Where I find fulfillment
Three things that make this work worth doing.
01
Turning worry into a plan
Uncertainty is heavier than risk. Handing someone a clear, ranked list of what to do next is the part of this job I like most.
02
Making it make sense
I get real satisfaction out of explaining something complicated so well that it stops feeling complicated.
03
Leaving teams stronger
The goal was never to be needed forever. It is to hand back an environment a team can run with confidence.
What We Value
Three principles that shape every engagement.
01
Honesty Over Alarmism
We tell you what your real risks are — not what sells the biggest project.
02
Practicality Over Perfection
Security that fits your size, budget, and reality — not a theoretical ideal.
03
Outcomes Over Deliverables
We measure success by what changes for you, not by the length of the report.
